Written and composed by Julie Gold.
From a Distance The world looks blue and green And the snow capped mountains white From a Distance The ocean meets the stream And the eagle takes to flight From a Distance There is harmony And it echoes through the land It's the voice of hope It's the voice of peace It's the voice of every man From a Distance We all have enough And no one is in need And there are no guns, No bombs, and no disease No hungry mouths to feed From a Distance We are instruments Marching in a common band Playing songs of hope Playing songs of peace They are the songs of every man God is watching us God is watching us God is watching us From a Distance From a Distance You look like my friend Even though we are at war From a Distance I just cannot comprehend What all this fighting's for From a Distance There is harmony And it echoes through the land And it's the hope of hopes It's the love of loves It's the heart of every man It's the hope of hopes It's the love of loves This is the song for every man God is watching us God is watching us God is watching us From a Distance Oh, God is watching us God is watching God is watching us From a Distance

She came to New York at the age of 22, in pursuit of her childhood dream of being a songwriter. She sent out demo tapes to everyone who would listen, but only her friends gave her encouragement. She did various odd jobs for a living. At that time she was living in a small and dark apartment, struggling to make ends meet.
This song changed her life, and Julie Gold recounted her story,
In 1985, just before my 30th birthday, my parents thought it would be a beautiful thing for me to be reunited with the piano of my childhood. So they sent it to me in December as my birthday present. I wasn't allowed to play it for a day because it was frozen like a block of ice. I just hugged and polished my piano all evening. The next day I sat down and “From a Distance” just poured out of me. On one hand, it took me two hours to write. On the other hand, it took me 30 years. Pick whichever hand makes you happy. I love them both. I had some preliminary lyrics. My songwriting ritual is always scales and arpeggios and chords, but that specific day I remember just feeling so connected to my instrument. And when these majestic chords came out of me, I knew they were going to be something I could use. Usually, if I get one good keystone, then I can build the house. When I'm finally done writing the song, I kiss the piano keys. Why? Because I know what it feels like to write a song, and I wonder if I’ll ever be given that opportunity again. So I’m grateful every time.Julie Gold recorded the song in a studio, and sent copies to all her contact. Most did not even reply. Only her friend and fellow songwriter Christine Lavin loved it and requested copies to send around to her friends. Within two weeks, her scratchy demo was getting radio play.

Nanci Griffith was the first to record it for her 1987 album, Lone Star State of Mind. She promoted the song in live shows, even a TV show in 1988.
Judy Collins recorded this song twice: first for her 1988 live album, Sanity and Grace; then for her 1990 studio album, Fires of Eden.
In July 1989, Julie Gold quit her job and became a full-time songwriter. During that time, she received a call from Bette Midler’s musical director.
Bette Midler was making a new album. In their search for songs, they called a film and music critic who suggested “From a Distance”. Julie sent her scratchy demo, and Bette recorded it.
Bette Midler recorded this song for her album, Some People's Lives, which awas released in September 1990. The song became a major hit, perhaps due to the start of Gulf War in August 1990.
Nanci Griffith 是首位錄製此曲的歌手,收錄在1987年專輯《Lone Star State of Mind》。
Bette Midler 把此曲,收錄在她的專輯《Some People's Lives》。
